This member of the large family of wrasses is usually found near rocky bottoms, jetties, wrecks, and bridge pilings. It feeds on mussels, barnacles, crabs and shrimp which it crushes with powerful molar teeth.

The state record weighs in at 19 lbs. and was caught off Oregon Inlet in 1992 by Louis M. Knoerzer.
