| King
Mackerel
The largest of the mackerel family, these powerful fish
are highly migratory, moving south in the fall and north
in the spring in search of food and warm waters. Kings
are generally caught offshore by trolling, and are hard
fighters when hooked.
While they can reach weights of 100 pounds, the state
record remains at 82 lbs. 4 oz. and was caught by James
Winch off Ocracoke in 1999.
